Interview: Yuli Sato

Experimenting, innovation and calm are the three words that come to mind as soon as I see the work of Yuli Sato, a 21-year-old photographer from Canada, who manages to carry the word ‘fantasy’ and ‘purity’ in each photo. Her images reflect an inexplicable flawlessness.

INTERVIEW

What is exactly what you want others to see when you take a photo?
A sense of mystery.

What keeps you photographing?
The thrill of developing a new roll of film and looking at the negatives on the walk home! And being able to meet amazing people from all over the world.

Do you see a camera in your future? How do you see yourself in a few years?
I hope so. In a few years I hope to have traveled to Europe and South America.

If you could only have three photos with you, which ones would they be?
A photograph of my mother and aunt wearing kimonos in the snow from the 1970s in Japan; my boyfriend and I on a forgotten rooftop; and . . . I can’t decide on a third. I hope to have my huge collection of negatives forever.

Two words you think should be ‘synonyms for color’
Atmosphere, emotion, adventure.

A day of the week: Sunday
